The Power of Flexibility

17 May 2023

Being flexible allows you to calmly adapt to a constantly changing world, much like Paul did in the Bible when he shared the message of Jesus with those he encountered. Similar to how an adult communicates with a baby, Paul met people where they were, even if they came from different cultures or religions. By seeking to understand them, he was able to speak with authority about his message of Jesus.

While some people are naturally more flexible than others, it’s a skill that can be learned. Here are some tips:

  • Try new things
  • Keep an open mind
  • Avoid being overly critical without giving something or someone a chance
  • Let go of the urge to control those around you
  • Recognize that you’re not the only one with solutions

By embracing flexibility, you can approach challenges with a sense of calm and confidence, and become more effective in your personal and professional life.

The added bonus of being flexible is that you may spontaneously enter into a moment of joy, like I did this morning.

I love coffee in the mornings, but that combined with a long car trip coming into work had me needing the toilet. I walked into the lift on P3 and pressed for level 1, but then it stopped on P2 to let a elderly man in. I was thinking that was a blow as I had to wait longer for the toilet. The gentleman, seeing me doing some serious side-stepping jiggling says, “Oh, we’re going to dance, are we?”

I offered my reason for the shuffle, (needing to go to the toilet) but then this thought popped into my head,

“Why don’t you dance Vetti?” “Well, why not?” I responded, “Yes, let’s dance”.

So, there we were in the lift with no music, apart from the man’s singing and dancing. We reached our floor, and I kindly thanked him for the dance. And to think, I could have missed that opportunity for joy if I had been rigid in my thinking.

To the weak I became weak, to win the weak. I have become all things to all people so that by all possible means I might save some. I do all this for the sake of the gospel, that I may share in its blessings. Paul in 1 Corinthians 9:22-23

Blessings, Vetti x
