Make ordinary moments key

10 September 2024

I’d like to talk about the short space of time when greeting our children and also when leaving them somewhere. Whether this is when they wake up, dropping them off to school or sports, picking them up, or putting them to bed. These are times that could set a positive ritual for a lifetime.

The moments are only a few seconds long, but the words and actions will leave an imprint on your child that will last much longer. When they wake up, greet them with big hugs, “Good morning sunshine, how was your sleep”? When they leave for school, “Have a great day beautiful.” When they come home, “What was fun about today”? When they go to bed, “Goodnight beautiful, Mummy loves you.” (Insert your own positive comments, mine are just a suggestion.)

In schools there has been a study done measuring the effects of a positive greeting by the teacher. The positive greeting resulted in an increased academic engagement by 20% and decreasing disruptive behaviour by 9%. If this is achieved by a teacher, imagine what impact a parent can make to their child when done regularly?

This is one of the best things I’ve done as a parent. Now my children are in their 30’s, we do this with each other still. And my heart still skips a beat when I hear these words back, “Love you Mum.”
