Making Memories
29 April 2025Children love fun, and sometimes the fun-est moments are created “spontaneously”- this is inverted commas because while the child may think it’s spontaneous, you’ve probably recreated a memory from your childhood or gotten ideas from a friend.
Let’s take the humble cardboard box. It can be converted into a child’s dream house, flattened to make a slippery dip on the top of stairs, interlocked to make tunnels or linked together making a train.
Accompany that box with towels and blankets and you have window coverings and roofs; Pillows are beds and teddies & dolls are friends. Now you’ve got the ingredients for an amazing play that will last all day!
We are not just creating a fun day, we are shaping their future-
- The surprise of fun out of a box creates an adrenaline hit that would mirror a trip to Disneyland (in my opinion)
- The opportunity to engage with your child at their level forges a strong bond
- The child will feel that you understand them
- This creativity can happen at any moment giving the child a sense of wonderment during the day, “what amazing thing will we do today”
- This will encourage them to look for those moments and think positively.
Not only is this free, we are showing our children that possessions don’t possess us, we possess them. That children are much more important than a neat and tidy room. I guess that’s why it’s called a living room, not a showroom.
“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” -Jesus
Luke 12:15
