Like a Sheep

12 September 2024

What does it mean to follow God like a sheep? It’s not about weakness — it’s about trust.

Sheep Are Not Glamorous — But That’s the Point

I grew up surrounded by sheep in country NSW. One of the most frustrating times? Mustering. Sheep just aren’t that smart.

So when Jesus says we’re to be like sheep, I’ll be honest — it doesn’t exactly thrill me.

But then I think about Psalm 23 — one of the most comforting and quoted scriptures in the Bible, especially at funerals. It’s not just poetic; it’s deeply personal. It’s an invitation to trust.

Psalm 23: A Call to Let Go

“The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
He makes me lie down in green pastures…”

This isn’t a passive image — it’s about surrender. Sheep don’t choose the pasture. They follow.

“Even though I walk through the darkest valley,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”

The Psalm reminds us: God is not distant. He walks with us, even when the way is dark or unclear.

And here’s what’s incredible — Psalm 23 was written by David, who began life as a humble shepherd boy and rose to become a king. Yet in this Psalm, he doesn’t write as a ruler commanding armies. He writes as a sheep — acknowledging that even kings need guidance.

At Integricare, this type of humility — childlike trust in God — shapes how we support every family. Our Christian identity reminds us that every role, from educator to parent to child, is held under the care of our Good Shepherd.

Why Jesus Calls Us Sheep

In the New Testament, Jesus says:

“My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.” — John 10:27

He doesn’t say, “My sheep understand every step.” He says they listen. They follow. That’s what faith looks like — moving even when we don’t have all the answers.

Hearing God’s voice isn’t always easy. But a good place to start is simply opening the Bible and doing our best to respond. It’s not about perfection — it’s about posture.

This spirit of gentle obedience is woven into our mission and values. We seek to build communities where every child learns what it means to be loved, led, and valued — just like the sheep in God’s pasture.

When Change Feels Impossible

For me, one of the hardest parts of following God is wanting to change.

Sometimes, I feel like there’s more change in an empty money box than in me. Maybe you can relate.

But that’s the thing about sheep — they don’t grow by trying harder. They grow by staying close to the Shepherd. As we keep listening, keep drawing near, something in us begins to shift. Slowly. Quietly. Steadily.

If you’re navigating change — in your family, your heart, or your faith — you’re not alone. And you don’t have to figure it all out. That’s the beauty of grace.

Stay Close to the Shepherd

Whatever season you’re in — busy, broken, or just unsure — I encourage you to stay close to the voice of Jesus. The Shepherd isn’t looking for perfect sheep. Just willing ones.

“My sheep listen to my voice… and they follow me.”

Blessings,
Vetti x
